Elven Heraldry. There are some rules (which I have broken a smudge) to these things, but they are certainly not real-world heraldry laws of tincture and such. Those I am, sad to say, pretty clueless. In fact I had to start familarizing myself with some basic vexillology images just to get started on the 'flag' portions of the banners.
Again, Third Age banners are going to have the things like the White Tree of Gondor, Rohan's horse on a vert field, Dol Amroth swan boat, White Hand of Orthanc.... Okay, seriously, was the red serpent of Harad the only Lord of the Rings banner in the novels that wasn't a white device on a colored field?
(But hey, now my user icons make more sense, right?)
